Funk Club

Show

Saturday 28th Mar, 2020

Show time @ 8:00-10:00pm

The full blast of a Katoomba winter westerly was rattling

the windows. Dr Funkenstein tried to smile, and heard a

disturbing cracking sound. Was it his teeth, or the longunused

muscles in his cheeks? He brooded before the fire;

gulped his red wine without tasting it. Then his lady-love

spun a Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers record. Cue

lightbulb moment. Suddenly Dr Funkenstein saw it all: the

way out of his self-pitying funk was funk.

If he put the fun back into funk, perhaps he would, in time,

learn to smile again. But the good doctor was allergic to

pretending to be an African American. He had too much

respect for those who had bequeathed the world the basis

for a century of popular music. No, were he to invent a

machine for making funk, it mustn't churn out second-rate

covers of James Brown and Sly Stone. So what about

funking up non-funk? That might be funny and funky. In

his usually dark and cheerless imagination the doctor

suddenly saw people from 18 to 80 laughing and dancing

to a band called the Funk Klub. That would make him

smile.

He instantly knew who could help bring this monster to

life: Professor Steam Funk, with his low-emissions, steamdriven

keyboards and mind- of-God ideas, and El Chapo

Funquero, a refugee from the revenge of Mexico's brutal

drug cartels, and the funkiest bass player since Bootsie

Collins strapped on a star-shaped axe.

The three disappeared into the Doctor's underground

laboratory, emerging four months later having scientifically

proved that anything from a Beatles song to jazz, from the

theme from Game of Thrones to that of The Godfather

could be funkified and fused into non-stop dance raves.

Then they thickened the mix with guitarist Brother Funk,

who could skank the legs off a possum at 20 paces, and

convert country into funk just by playing some weird jazz

chord on his trusty Telecaster.

Now for singers to make the "k" in "funk" feel lost and

lonely: enter Mr Funk Buddy and Ms Dotti. They iced the

cake, added the dance steps and began to exercise Dr

Funkenstein's rigor mortis-afflicted smile muscles.

Suddenly Kylie Minogue, Goran Bregovic, Portugal and Split

Enz became long-lost musical siblings who could

incestuously funk together. Lastly they adopted stage alter

egos: Ms Dotti became chorister/dancer Lee Louise; Mr

Funk Buddy became actor, singer and clown supreme Andy

McDonnell; Brother Funk became guitarist, singer and

songwriter Craigus Readon; Professor Steam Funk became

composer, writer and Les Smokin' Gitanes accordionist

Nigel Glassey; El Chapo Funquero became bassist, guitarist

and photographer Albert Van Gestal; Dr Funkenstein

became drummer, playwright and Walkley-winning Sydney

Morning Herald writer John Shand.

For those who dare, the Funk Klub plays the Clarendon,

Katoomba, on Saturday, January 11, ably supported by the

exciting Safire Palms.

Safire Palms, a very funked up four piece delivering

smooth tunes for your listening pleasures. This Blue

Mountains band of funk enthusiasts are Nick Macken, Rory

Wilson, Riley Hunter and Bailey Brown. Safire Palms put

the power of music into everyone’s palms with a jazzy, feel

good, upbeat and funky vibe for everyone to bop to.

Empty Fish Tank

The fourth album launch

- live solo acoustic

- POP/ROCK/FOLK Music

Show

Friday 28th Feb., 2020

Show time @ 7:00-9:30pm

Empty Fish Tank -

Anthony SILVESTRINI

&

Gen LEE /

Max STEEL

Empty Fish Tank is a pop/rock indie project fronted by Anthony Silvestrini from the Blue Mountains. Started in 2013 and drawing on influences such as Wilco and Crowded House, the band has played numerous gigs including supporting The Cockroaches, Lime Cordiale and Gavin Bowles & The Distractions.

Debut album ’Same Old Same Old’ (2014) was mixed by Brad Jones (Bob Evans) and features fan favourites 'Are You Sticking Around?' and 'Long Gone'. Sophomore album ‘Commerical Music’ (2018) focused more on large band arrangements, showcasing more complex songwriting while still maintaining high energy, lively and fun songs Empty Fish Tank are known for. Mixed by Paul McKercher (Augie March, You Am I), and mastered by William Bowden (Gotye, Ball Park Music), the album included the amphetamine hoedown 'Good New For No One', the pure-form 60s R&B 'Nala', and the impostor rock 'Jynx'. Album 3 ‘Doge’ (2020) was recorded using only 1 microphone to tape-to-tape reel, replicating lofi recording techniques from the 50s with modern indie compositions. The album features singles ‘FCG’ and ‘Nothing’s Stopping Time’ revealing a more honest, folk-acoustic vibe to Anthony’s songwriting.

Now, with 3 albums worth of material, Anthony has decided to release a live-to-tape solo record called ‘UNO’ (2020). Featuring new arrangements of songs spanning across the 3 albums, plus a new song called ‘13th, this 4th album is vastly different in style and yet feels strangely familiar.

‘UNO’ album launch is on Friday 28th February at The Clarendon Guesthouse, Katoomba. Tickets are $14 and are available on the night or via the Guesthouse.

Empty Fish Tank - think The Go-Betweens and The Beatles having dinner while listening to Powderfinger.

Robert Forster

Show

Thursday 11th July, 2019

Show time @ 8:30-10:00 pm

cid:image008.jpg@01D5ACF5.E42172E0

‘The jungle is coming up to the door,

The birds that are calling are hard to ignore’

‘Inferno’, set for release on March 1, is acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster’s first solo album in 4 years - his second album over the last eleven years. Forster only makes records when he feels he has the songs – on Inferno, he has 9 he totally believes in.

They range from the exhilarating top ten pop of Inferno (Brisbane In Summer), the beach shack groove of Life Has Turned a Page, via Remain’s 1977 New York strut, to finish in a way that this concise, brilliant, drama and wit filled album only can - on the big build epic One Bird In The Sky.

Inferno was made in Berlin in 2018, during the hottest German summer in decades. Noted producer/engineer Victor Van Vugt (Beth Orton ‘Trailor Park’, P J Harvey ‘Stories of the City, Stories from the Sea’), recorded the album; the first time he and Forster had worked together since Van Vugt engineered Forster’s debut solo album classic ‘Danger In The Past’ in Berlin in 1990.

Inferno in its making is a perfect mix of the familiar and the new. Also working with Forster again, are Brisbane based multi-instrumentalists Scott Bromiley and Karin Bãumler from ‘Songs To Play’ (2015). While, new recruits are drummer Earl Havin (Tindersticks, Mary J. Blige) and keyboardist Michael Muhlhaus (Blumfeld, Kante). Four musicians from the corners of the world, who, with Van Vugt’s bold and beautiful production, sound like a band of the ages. In front of them, Forster delivers the best vocal performances of his career

Early praise for ‘Inferno’ single:

“There’s a classic rock’n’roll swing to the first cut from The Go-Betweens founder’s new album”   - Q Magazine

“Deliciously wry, effortlessly melodious reflections on ageing, climate change and the debatable consolations of cult status: “I don’t need no fame!” - Uncut

Over the last four years Forster has been busy. He curated the acclaimed, Domino Records released, ‘Anthology Volume 1 1978-1984’ on his old band The Go-Betweens. His memoir ‘Grant & I’ was Mojo and Uncut’s Book Of The Year. He continues to publish music journalism, play concerts, and he never stops writing beautiful songs.

He looks forward to touring Inferno; starting with a full band tour of Europe in April/May 2019, followed by his Australian tour in July.

Shane Howard

Trio

Friday 26th April, 2019

Show time @ 7:30-10:00 pm

cid:image009.jpg@01D5ACF5.E42172E0

For 35 years Shane Howard's songs have mapped an Australian landscape. From the dry desert landscape where he penned ‘Solid Rock’ to the Wild Rivers of Tasmania and ‘Let the Franklin Flow’ he’s created a uniquely Australian voice and traversed a vast landscape in his travels.

With his 13th album ‘Deeper South’, the musical landscape is as vast, mysterious and powerful as the Southern Ocean that roars outside Howard’s true musical home, in a shack down by the South West Victorian coast.

‘Deeper South’ is an album that redefines the boundaries of Australian folk music and reinvigorates it with poetic and musical mastery. The musical influences are as diverse as jazz, blues, country, Australian folk music and the deep well of traditional Celtic music.

On this album, Shane’s great musicality is enriched by the accomplished playing of John Hudson (Guitar/Dobro) and Ewen Baker (Fiddle/Mandolin). The live show rocks and rolls, like a boat ploughing deep into Antarctic waters, set free from the troubles that beset the land, sailing wildly into the tempest of mighty squalls. Gentler songs are deeply meditative, picture the calm, glassy, seas of Summer. Irish and Scottish tunes flow in and out, like ocean currents.

This is true folk music, but not as we know it!

MARK WILKINSON

BLUE EYED GIRLS TOUR

Singer-songwriter, Americana, Indie Folk, Acoustic – these are all labels that could aptly apply to Australia’s Mark Wilkinson, but ultimately he lends his voice to the human condition. Those moments in life that bear memory, those questions that drive us all. So universal they aren’t bound by time or place, but so few can ever put into words.
"He truly has a gift for poetic lyrics...There's a glow of warm around him and richness to his supreme voice, sending shivers down spines as he pulls you into the soul of him." – Hazel Buckley, TheMusic.com.au
It’s this simple but all too rare ability to connect that’s brought him acclaim the world over. His music has risen the charts on two continents, his shows have sold out in half a dozen countries more. He’s shared arena stages with some of music’s most enigmatic names like Brian Wilson and Rodriguez, but he can still be found performing on the street, forging connections through song without barrier or contrivance.
With three full length albums under his belt already, 2019 sees Wilkinson return to the live stage in support of his fourth record, "Blue Eyed Girls". Set for release in March 2019, this new collection of songs comes hot on the tail of "Wasted Hours" which hit #1 on the Australian independent album charts in early 2018.
The 'Blue Eyed Girls' tour will encompass a lengthy run across Australia throughout March, April and May before heading to North America in June and onto Europe through July and August for a slew of shows in the northern hemisphere.
Don't miss the chance to catch one of his powerful and moving live performances as he showcases songs from his new album along with fan favourites from his ever growing catalogue.

Live in Concert

The Pigs – Unashamedly hillbilly, Outrageously entertaining

“The musical outrage that is The Pigs!” - Richard Glover (ABC Sydney)

THE family that plays together, stays together and bluegrass band, The Pigs, are living proof as they prepare to unleash their first all original album on the world.

Having played music together in the hillbilly mountains of Australia for many years, some say hundreds of years, The Pigs decided in 2004 to come from the remotest corners of the outback to form the band in Sydney.

Once the word got around that the family band had gone public with their brand of bluegrass, they were unstoppable and the fans came trotting in.

The Pigs’ sounder of swine is made up of personnel: * T-Bone Pig – Lead vocals, nylon string acoustic guitar, mandolin * Stretch Pig – Lead vocals, steel string acoustic guitar, harmonicas * Cousin Burt (The Daytime Stripper) – Double bass, backing vocals * Cousin Shamus – Stand-up drum kit

And, due to having such a large family, they are often joined by:

* Cousin Montz – Banjo * Cousin Oink – Fiddle

Highlights of The Pigs’ 13 years on the Australian highways include performances at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, The Gympie Music Muster, Woodford Folk Festival, The Deni Ute Muster, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Broadbeach Country Music Festival, and Queenscliff Music Festival.
